Problem importing External Tool Skyline daily on Windows 11 david schmidt  2025-02-27 09:18

Hi,

we have trouble importing an external tool that we wrote in the past into a new installation of skyline daily on windows 11. The error message is a bit cryptic: Failed attempting to extract from xyz.zip. A value of NULL is not allowed. Parametername: key

Could you please indicate the source of the problem?

best wishes, David

Can you send us the Tool .zip file that you are trying to install? If it is less than 50MB you can attach it to this support request. Larger files can always be uploaded here:
https://skyline.ms/files.url

Can you give us more information about the error that you are running into? Most error message boxes in Skyline have a "More Info" button which would tell us exactly where in our code the error is happening. They also have a copy button in the lower left corner which copies all of the text of the message to the Clipboard including the information that would be shown if you were to press the More Info button.
It would be helpful if you could send us the full text of that error message.

Hi Nick,
Thank you for the swift response. I've uploaded the file (Tools.zip). Attached I'm sending screenshots of the error message and of the External Tools window. The latter is completely empty in the installation. I don't know whether this is normal.

best wishes,
David

I believe that error is happening because one of the Reports that you already have has a blank name.
This error does not actually have anything to do with what is in your tool zip file except that the tool zip file contains a .skyr file with some report definitions that the tool wants to add.

I am not sure how you got in this state, because Skyline usually prevents you from creating a Report with a blank name.
You can probably fix this by deleting the Report with a blank name.
At the top of the Document Grid ("View > Live Reports > Document Grid"), there is a "Reports" dropdown. If you choose the menu item "Manage Reports" you will see all of the Reports that you have. If you see one with a blank name, delete it.

If you are not able to delete the report that way, you can instead use the "Tools > Options" menu item.
On the "Miscellaneous" tab of the Options dialog, there is a big button "Clear All Saved Settings".
If you push that button, then Skyline will forget all of its settings, including the Report with the blank name. It will also forget all of the other settings, including all the External Tools that you have added, all of your other custom Report definitions and all of the other settings in Skyline including the list of most recently opened files, Modifications, the locations of all of the spectral libraries, etc.

Let me know if you have any idea how you that report with a blank name might have been created.
I will try to fix Skyline-daily so that it does not have a problem with a blank name there.

Hi Nick,

thank you so much. It was indeed the unnamed report that caused the problem. We have no idea where it comes from. It appeared the first time with the new installation on windows 11. We use a blank skyline document, so it shouldn't have been carried over from a previous document. We also can't reproduce it on other systems.

best wishes,
David
