Not able to install Skyline maarten.boeckmans  2012-11-21 07:26

Dear Brendan,

It is not possible for me to install Skyline because of the following error:

"Cannot Start Application"
'Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance.'

Can you please provide us with an installation file so we don't have to download first?
Thanks.
Maarten

Hi Maarten,
Which browsers have you tried this with? It appears from the log file that for some reason you are ending up with the Skyline.application in your "C:/Documents and Settings/jrc-admin-boecmaa/My Documents" folder.

Many other people had have success installing Skyline on Windows XP, though I have heard of this issue before. Unfortunately, I can't quite remember how we got around it. I am wondering if it is just an anomaly or a specific browser.

Hopefully this time we will capture the cause and solution in this support request for the next person to run into this.

Hi Brendan,

I was able to download and install the unplugged version (1.4.0.4101).
Is this the same version? And will this version automatically detect updates if there is an internet connection?

Best regards,
Maarten

Hi Maarten,
I would still prefer to know about the browsers you have tried and which browser (and version) you were using when you ended up with the Skyline.application file saved to your local computer. That is not how browsers are supposed to handle this file.

Yes, you can always go "unplugged", and use a local installation, but as you suspect that will mean that you will need to manage your own updates. The unplugged version is generally recommended for computers, like some instrument control computers, which are not connected to the internet.

I would never make this my default recommendation for handling your issue. So, I would still prefer to know more about what might work to give you the connected version, and definitely which browser is causing your reported issue.

Thanks for taking a little more time to better understand the issue.

Hi Brendan,

When using IE8 I can't access the website: https://brendanx-uw1.gs.washington.edu/labkey/project/home/software/Skyline/begin.view
Messege I get in IE8: There is a problem with this website's security certificate.
So I use Firefox 10.0.6 and than choose 'launch the application now' and save the file in My Documents or anywhere locally.
When I open the file Skyline.application I get the error from my first message: 'Cannot Start Application'

- If I download the setup.exe and run it I get the error: An error occurred attempting to install Skyline.
Details: An error occurred trying to download 'https://skyline.gs.washington.edu/software/Skyline-release_1_4/Skyline.application'.
See the setup log file located at 'C:\DOCUME~1\JRC-AD~3\LOCALS~1\Temp\VSD2EB.tmp\install.log' for more information. -

I think our proxy is blocking this.

Friendly regards,
Maarten

Hi Maarten,
That is strange about IE8 not accepting the security certificate. You might try the newer web site URL:

https://skyline.gs.washington.edu

We made an effort to keep the original server name (brendanx-uw1.gs.washington.edu) alive, since there were links to it on various other web sites, in email, etc.

But, really, you should be using the skyline.gs.washington.edu server name.

If your proxy is blocking the download of the Skyline.application file, which it could be, then you probably are stuck with the disconnected installer, which you said you used successfully. One of the first people I ever gave this installer to was inside Merck, and experienced similar difficulty with proxy permissions.

Thanks for putting a little extra time into understanding this better.
