Title»Topograph failed and gave "contact manufacturer" message on home computer
Assigned To»nicksh@u.washington.edu
Type»Defect
Area»Topograph
Priority»2
Milestone»1.2
After I tried to open the 04Nov autophagy database from my home computer, Topograph seemed to disappear (not in the Processes list, etc.). I tried to start Topograph again. There was a long period during which my computer thrashed. It may already have been slowed down by some unspecified trouble. At one point I saw my Norton antivirus software flash up a banner in which it claimed that SONAR was "assessing security risk Topograph." Eventually I got a dialog box that said the application couldn't run and directed me to contact the manufacturer.

I restarted my computer and tried again, and once again got the "can't run" dialog. I am pasting in the text of the error file.

When I do a Google search for "System.Deployment.Application.ComponentStore.ActivateApplication" people talk about upgrading the version of Internet Explorer, or being sure to install the .Net runtime 3.5 from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/cc378097

There might be more information about what it's looking for and cannot find if you go to:
Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer|Windows Logs|Application

This may or may not be relevant, but I have also been getting periodic error messages on my work computer. I most often see these after I've been away from the computer a while (often overnight) and have left Topograph open. The dialog box is titled "RunDLL," and the text is as follows: "There was a problem starting C:\Users\Evvie\AppData\Local\winnetServices\winobjcdrom.dll. Access is denied."

Topograph also threw some exceptions recently (again, on my work computer), and I foolishly did not save the error reports. I do recall that the error messages referred to external components, and that closing and reopening Topograph temporarily remedied the problem. If this happens again, I will save the error messages.

I now know what happened. Norton AntiVirus decided Topograph was highly suspicious, quarantined it, and blocked it--without informing me explicitly what it had done. I figured this out only when the monthly "dangers detected" report popped up. I un-quarantined Topograph and told Norton AntiVirus not to let SONAR scan the folder where it's installed. Topograph is now working again, if very slowly.

I doubt I'll be the last user to have this issue. Is there a way to convince antivirus software that Topograph is not malware?
