Skyline installation without admin privileges? lparsons  2017-08-15 07:51

It seems that at least in my experience Skyline requires administrator access to install. While I understand that some of the requisite packages (particularly the vendor libraries to read proprietary file formats) need administrator access to install, is there any chance that there could be a future version of Skyline that could be installed by users who do not have administrator access?

This could be particularly valuable for helping users who are customers of core facilities but have their PCs managed by yet another department; they might not have admin privileges on the PCs in their labs for this reason. If they could just ask their IT managers to install the vendor libraries and then do Skyline installation and updates themselves that could be beneficial.

thank you

How are you installing? This is not intentionally the case, and I am confident that it was not the case the last time I checked for either the web installer or the "unplugged" disconnected installer in a ZIP file.

It is our expectation that only the installer labeled the "Skyline Administrator Install" should require administrative privileges. This installer was created by request for people creating shared installations for applications like teaching, distributing on VMs, etc.

If you feel the web or disconnected installers have become dependent on having administrator privileges, we would consider that a bug. If you can give us more details on what you are seeing when you try to install without administrator privileges, we can try to help solve the issue.

Thanks for reporting your experience. I have to admit it has been a while since we explicitly tested this ourselves. I hope we didn't break this for everyone shortly after our last try at non-administrator installation and you are just the first to report it.

Brendan

One example I have is a system that is currently running 3.6.0.10570; when I start it, the software finds an update that it wants to install (to go to 3.7.0.x). I can download the update without issue but I am unable to install it; I receive an error that I don't have the permission to do it. However I do not recall whether I did that install myself or not; perhaps it was installed by someone else with admin privileges and because of that I cannot update it?

I do have another system that is running 3.7.0.10940 where I installed skyline myself. I thought the installer required admin though I cannot say that with 100% certainty at this point.

The former system is running Windows server 2k8r2, the latter server 12 - both 64 bit. I'm trying to locate another windows system to attempt to install on to in order to see if I can reproduce the problems I saw the last time I attempted to install.

Can you send the full log for the system where you get the error that you don't "have the permission" to upgrade?

I am going to need to read the words of the error message. It may be that you are misinterpreting the message.

It may also be that you can return that system to a state where you can accept upgrades by following the instructions on the page on "Recovering From a Broken Installation":

https://skyline.ms/wiki/home/software/Skyline/page.view?name=tip_recover_install

This helps you save your settings, uninstall completely and then install again.

There is not supposed to be any requirement of administrative privileges. Especially if you get an error trying to install as a non-administrator user on a clean machine, we would be very interested in hearing about it. Though, I am pretty sure we have had participants in our courses achieve this on computers where they don't even have access to change the desktop in their laptop accounts.

Keep the information coming. I am sure we can get to the bottom of this.
