Food Allergen Proteomics Research Scientist

Conduct research in collaboration with faculty principal investigators (PIs) on a broad range of food allergen proteomics projects, with a primary focus on protein mass spectrometry (MS) applications. Research activities are expected to include discovery proteomics experiments for food allergen protein characterization, development and evaluation of targeted, quantitative MS methods, purification and evaluation of food proteins, and assessment of samples by immunoassay (ELISA, Western blotting, etc.). Research responsibilities include designing experiments, preparing samples, and conducting laboratory analysis, performing proteomics and statistical data analysis, and writing research reports and summaries.

Operate, supervise, and conduct routine maintenance on high-resolution LC-MS/MS instrument. Generate and monitor instrument performance data and serve as primary manager of coordination with instrument vendor service engineers. Develop and implement standardized and automated protocols for food allergen MS methods and data analysis for internal and external use.

Act as direct contact person with industrial clients (outside funding sources) and research collaborators, in collaboration with project PIs. Participate in research communication through conference presentations, primary manuscript drafting for individually led projects, and co-author contributions on collaborative projects.

Oversee all aspects of laboratory management in collaboration with PIs, including safety monitoring and training, mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students (e.g., as a resource for experimental design planning and statistical analysis assistance). Assist students and workers in the development of mass spectrometry protocols needed for their experiments. Maintain laboratory compliance with safety requirements and SOPs.

Master’s degree plus two years of relevant experience or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science or related field. Relevant experience should show both basic and technical science including experience with mass spectrometry. Project management and/or supervisory experience required. Prioritization, organizational, communication and facilitation skills essential. Record-keeping and computer skills necessary. Must have knowledge of compliance and safety regulations and demonstrated ability to teach others.

Proteomics (protein mass spectrometry), protein purification, immunoassay (ELISA, Western blotting), and other protein chemistry experience (e.g., SDS-PAGE) is preferred.
